Letters from Vienna #179
Letter to Baron Bethell #2
A virtual guided tour of Vienna, Part 2
One of the most wonderful things about summer in Vienna are the so-called “Heuriger[1]”; especially those to be found in Grinzing, the 19th district. Four examples, which I’d heartily recommend are Mayer am Pfarrplatz, Kierlinger, Schübel-Auer and Martin Zimmermann, which are all a stone’s throw away from one another.
Not far removed, and which you could visit beforehand is the Beethoven Museum in the Probusgasse.
Also, to be recommended is a visit to the Grinzinger Friedhof (cemetery), where the “Geistesgrößen” (great minds) such as Gustav Mahler, Heinrich von Ferstel & Thomas Bernhard are buried.
If you wish to get a nice view of the city you could go up to the Leopoldsberg (from where the liberation of Vienna in 1683 was planned), the Kahlenberg or the Cobenzl (pictured here).
Sadly, time is pressing, the weather is warm, I’m getting out of the city, and I’ll cease for the time being…there is so much about the 19th one could write!
[1] “Heuriger” means “this year’s” and is used for the wine from the latest wine-harvest, and also signifies the place where the wine is sold.
