It's been going a long time. A friend I had a few years ago had a daughter at Cambridge. I was invited on a ski holiday with them to keep the mother company off-piste. I'd never met the girl before and it soon became obvious why I was invited along. In the chalet, there was no interaction between mum and daughter. The girl stayed in her room the whole time only coming out to prepare food for herself. She was unable to look directly at anyone she had to speak to and certainly no physical contact between mum and daughter. It took a bit of coaxing from me just to get her to stand close to her mum and put arms around each other for a photo. I soon realised something not quite right. In addition, her appearance was boyish, short cropped hair, very hairy legs and armpits, noticed when we went swimming, in total contrast to her mother, who's emergency handbag item was a pair of tweezers and magnifying mirror, used every morning! The mother told me that the daughter identified as androgenous, as did her boyfriend. She showed me a photo of the pair of them, her looking manly in trousers and him wearing a dress, with long flowing locks! I remember thinking to myself, I'm happy my kids weren't clever enough to go to Cambridge. I'm no longer in touch with the woman and have no idea of how things turned out for the daughter. From my reading, it appears people on the autism spectrum are more likely to have gender issues, and being "androgenous" doesn't mean the daughter actually wanted to be male, but I wonder if it was the first step, or was it just a phase?
